There’s a word for all of this. And that word is bullshit. But there’s also a phrase for it: social license to operate. What that means is this: we know that a huge majority of rapes are perpetrated by a small minority of guys who do it again and again. You know why they’re able to rape an average of 6 times each? Because they have social license to operate. In other words: because we let them. Because as a society, we say “oh well, what did she expect would happen if she went back to his room? What did she expect would happen walking around by herself in that neighborhood? What did she expect would happen dressed like a slut?

“Turn right in 2 miles. Do not disappoint me.”
“How grand it must be to have the luxury of not taking Exit 12. Turn around when possible, you bumbling idiot.”
“How extraordinarily like your father you are; he would have missed the turn-off too. Turn around and go back, you pathetic fool.”
“There will be no foolish lane-merging or silly u-turns in the next mile.”
Now that’s a GPS I would use.

Androcentrism: It’s Okay to Be a Boy, but Being a Girl… » Sociological Images I think the ‘women are required to do femininity and simultaneously punished for it’ bit sums up 90% of sexism in one sentence. (via shashirosa) |
- In 1930, illegal abortions were recorded as the cause of death for 2,700 women, 18 percent of all maternal deaths in that year.
- Before 1973, an estimated 1.2 million women had illegal abortions in the United States yearly. As many as 5,000 died each year as a result.
- Between 1973 and 2002, more than 42 million illegal abortions were performed.
- Risk of death during childbirth is eleven times higher than the risk of death from legal abortion.

If I’m going to have a baby and take on a risk of death 11 times higher than that of if I had an abortion instead, it’s going to be because I WANT TO, dammit, not because anti-choice bigots made it impossible for women to get basic medical services. All of which is under the guise of “pro-life” (not the woman’s life though) but is really rampant and obvious slut-shaming and misogyny. :-P
